A documentary about a young nun from Northern Ireland had its premiere in her home city this week on the second anniversary of her death in an earthquake in Ecuador.

The film, All or Nothing: Sr Clare Crockett, received a standing ovation following the screening in a cinema in Derry. It was made by her order from archives of photographs and videos as well as more than 120 interviews conducted since Sr Clare’s death at the age of 33, when a school collapsed in Playa Prieta on 16 April 2016.

The title reflects Sr Clare’s radical decision to give up a budding acting career and embrace religious life at the age of 18, joining the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother.

An American nun who did her formation at the same time and who took charge of the post-production of the film, Sr Kristen Gardner, told The Tablet: “Sr Clare was so full of joy and love. It was as if God permeated her.”

She recalled going to visit her in Ecuador and undertaking a four-hour trip in the back of a pick-up truck to visit a school. “Sr Clare told stories the whole way and we laughed so much,” she said. “It is a beautiful memory.”

Sr Kristen, who travelled with other sisters from her current base in Spain for the premiere, said the first showing attracted many young people. “Many said they were really impressed by how Sr Clare had responded to God, and that it was like an examination of conscience, that they could also be better.”

The film was also shown in Sr Clare’s former school, St Cecilia’s College, whose principal, Martine Mulhern, hailed her as a role model. “Her faith in God led her to accomplish the most amazing things,” she said. “Sr Clare has left an incredible legacy in our school and we are incredibly proud of her.”
