Callista Gingrich has been confirmed as the United States ambassador to the Holy See.

Senators approved her nomination by 70 to 23 votes on Monday 16 October.

Gingrich is the third wife of former House Speaker, Newt Gingrich, a known ally of President Trump. Trump announced in May of this year that he would nominate the former congressman’s wife for the post.

Callista Gingrich is president of Gingrich Productions, which produces documentaries. In 2010, the company released the film ‘Nine Days That Changed the World’ about Pope John Paul II's nine-day pilgrimage to Poland in 1979.

Gingrich has worked for the US House Committee on Agriculture as chief clerk and was a key figure in her husband’s 2012 bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

She becomes the 11th US ambassador to the Vatican. Gingrich succeeds Ambassador Ken Hackett, who retired in January, and will be the third woman to serve in the post.

The ambassadorship began in 1984 with the official opening of diplomatic relations between the United States under Ronald Reagan and the Vatican under Pope John Paul.
