Vatican at UN calls for nuclear-free world

In a wide-ranging speech to the UN General Assembly on Monday (25 September), Archbishop Paul Gallagher gave the intervention for the Holy See in the General Debate on the theme of “Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life on a Sustainable Planet”.

He said it was imperative to protect the “right to life, freedom of religion, food, water, housing, work and to a safe environment”.

The care of refugees and the safe, orderly and regular treatment of migrants, the eradication of human trafficking and all forms of human slavery, and the battle against the legal and illegal arms trade were all of primary importance he said. He commented on the situations in Yemen, Syria, Venezuela, the Middle East, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ukraine, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, and spoke about the significance of the Holy See’s signing of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons last week.
