Marx questions religions and violence

As religions are involved in many of the numerous ongoing violent conflicts today, it is imperative that all faiths must ask themselves whether they are contributing towards peace or conflict, Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich underlined in a debate at Echternach, Luxembourg on 2 June, writes Christa Pongratz-Lippitt.

Today “religions are called upon to ask themselves – and must permit themselves to be asked – whether by the way they are interpreted or lived they contribute towards justifying conflicts or even fuelling them, or whether they are promoting peace and reconciliation between nations and culturally different groups”, he said.
