Paris police say attacker shot and wounded outside of Notre Dame

The public have been told to stay away from the area

French Police say they have shot and wounded a man outside of Notre Dame cathedral, after he tried to attack a police officer with a hammer.

The assailant is reported to have been shot in the chest. The area surrounding the Cathedral has been closed and police have warned the public to stay away from the area.

The motive for the attack is not yet known.

The incident comes just three days after seven people were killed and 48 injured when three terrorists in a van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing a police officer and several several others in Borough Market.
