Prayers for deliverance from ‘empire of violence’

The five bishops of the dioceses of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo have written a joint message to all the faithful asking for peace and prayers as the state, and more specifically the capital city Vitória, descended into a state of anarchy and violence, writes Filipe Avillez.

Violence began brewing after Friday 2 February, when the state’s military police, who are responsible for maintaining public order, went on strike following protests by their wives and mothers, who are demanding better working conditions. Criminals took to the streets, generating a wave of looting, theft and murder that forced most shops and services to close and left at least 142 people dead in a matter of days. Public transport was suspended and most residents stayed indoors, only venturing out if strictly necessary. Videos uploaded to social media showed scenes of robbery and looting in broad daylight.

In their message, the state’s five bishops remind their faithful that “during these moments we are made aware of our weakness and the danger brought about by an empire of violence”.
