New Centre for Catholic Social Thought and Practice

by Lorna Donlon

The new centre will bring together academics, charities, religious orders and social movements who are engaged in CST

Migration is a defining moral challenge of our generation, yet we have failed to come up with effective political or legal strategies to tackle it, said Dr Anna Rowlands, who was speaking at the launch of the new Centre for Catholic Social Thought and Practice.

The debate on migration is one of several projects by the Centre, which is a new national network with links to academics, charities, religious orders and social movements who are working in the areas of Catholic social thought and practice.

The aim is to bring these ideas into the wider political and economic spheres and to have a greater impact on policy-makers following “an explosion of interest” in Catholic social teaching, said Dr Rowlands, the Chair of the Centre and a lecturer in Catholic Studies at Durham University.

Jonathan Cox, Deputy Director of Citizens UK, urged churches to do something “more significant” with communities in order to build long-term relationships that take away people’s fears in relation to refugees.

The Centre will hold a number of public events around the country, including Oxford, Cambridge and Durham, over the coming months.
