Faith groups challenge Calais ‘jungle’ demolition

Refugees squatting in a shanty town outside Calais in northern France ignored an official order from the French authorities to evacuate part of their camp at the beginning of this week, and gathered at a court hearing on Tuesday afternoon trying to halt its demolition, writes Ellen Teague.

They were supported by church and civil society groups, particularly concerned for hundreds of unaccompanied minors in the “jungle”. Several thousand people would be affected overall.

Seeking Sanctuary, run by Phil Kerton and Ben Bano of Southwark Archdiocese Justice and Peace, reported that the judge visited the camp on Tuesday morning where she met several unaccompanied minors.

At the time of going to press it looked as if a court judgment would not be issued for several days. Catholics assisting the refugees include Comboni Missionary Sisters from Chiswick, Caritas Secours Catholique and CSAN, social action arm of the England and Wales bishops’ conference.
