Law on abortion defended

The Paraguayan bishops have reaffirmed their position on abortion, following the birth of a baby to a girl of 11 who had been raped, writes Isabel de Bertodano.

Mariano Mercado, speaking for the Bishops’ Conference, said “the human being has rights from the first moment of existence”. Abortion is illegal in Paraguay, unless the mother’s life is in danger.
