Call to rethink the whole European project

THE Secretary General of Caritas Europa has described the Greek crisis as putting the whole European “project” at risk, but at the same time delivering an opportunity to rethink European priorities, writes James Roberts.

“The [project] has never been so much at risk as it is now, yet there has never been a better moment for it to be reshaped to include a more humane and societal dimension,” Jorge Nuño Mayer told The Tablet. He acknowledged the “enormous deficiencies at governance level” of the Greek state and the fact that Greece was “not fit” to join the euro when it did. But the austerity imposed on Greece “has not solved problems but created new ones” linked to increasing poverty.
