Bishop accuses the rich of ‘vandalism’

Argentina

One of Argentina’s most senior politicians has called for an investigation into business practice after a bishop denounced the spiralling levels of corruption, writes Isabel de Bertodano. Bishop Jorge Lozano, president of the Pastoral Social Commission of the Bishops’ Conference, drew attention to the “vandalism by the rich and looting by the corrupt” in an article in the newspaper La Nación at Christmas. Speaking in the context of looting in December during a police strike, the bishop said that rather than focussing on those who stole from shops one should look at the daily “moral” looting such as “corruption in contracts for public works, bribes, police and judiciary turning a blind eye to slavery networks”.
Cabinet chief minister Jorge Capitanich said: “As a practising Catholic I invite the Church to debate with me about business corruption.”
