Ex-nuncio hospitalised on first day of abuse trial

The former Vatican diplomat Józef Wesolowski, who was nuncio in the Dominican Republic from 2008 to 2013 and is accused of sexual abuse of minors there, was taken to hospital with an “unexpected illness” on the opening day of his trial last Saturday.

The trial was suspended and postponed until a later date, yet to be announced. No further details of Wesolowski’s medical condition were given.

Polish-born Wesolowski is the first nuncio to face charges relating to abuse of minors.

He is also accused of possessing child pornography after fleeing to Vatican City State.

Pope Francis has described the case as a “dagger” in his heart.
