Laity to petition Pope over Chilean bishop accused of cover-up

Three representatives of a Chilean diocese where laity and clergy have protested against its new bishop are to try to petition Pope Francis on Thursday during his Latin American visit.

Juan Barros Madrid was installed as the Bishop of Osorno in March but many fellow bishops and Chile’s two cardinals did not attend his installation Mass, which was cut short because of unprecedented scenes of protest in the cathedral.

Victims allege that Bishop Barros covered up abuse by convicted paedophile and former priest Fernando Karadima, including some he witnessed. Barros denies the claims.

According to the US-based National Catholic Reporter, three delegates of the diocese’s Organisation of Lay People are travelling to Santa Cruz in Bolivia in the hope of presenting a letter to Pope Francis during the World Meeting of Popular Movements, which Francis is to address on Thursday.
