CofE’s prayer for the election: Lead us not into cynicism

Turning up at a polling station to vote could be described as the sacred duty of any citizen living in a democracy.

And to assist people as they do so today, the Church of England has issued a special prayer for today’s general election.

The brief prayer asks God to protect people from “the sins of despair and cynicism” and “guard us against the idols of false utopias”.

“Strengthen us to make politics a noble calling that serves the common good of all,” it concludes.

In February the House of Bishops came under fire from some MPs for saying politicians needed to discover “a fresh moral vision”. In their 52-page voter guidance they also complained of Britain's "almost moribund political culture".

The prayer is below:

Lord, we give thanks for the privileges and responsibilities of living in a
democratic society.

Give us wisdom to play our part at election time, that, through the exercise of each vote, your Kingdom may come closer.

Protect us from the sins of despair and cynicism, guard us against the idols of false utopias and strengthen us to make politics a noble calling that serves the common good of all.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Amen.
