Sydney Xavier, a retired British civil servant and civil engineer, writes:

About 15 years ago, I saw copies of The Tablet displayed at the entrance to the Sacred Heart Church in Wimbledon where I attended Sunday Mass, and nearby there was an honesty box into which you put money for Catholic newspapers and magazines. At that time, I couldn’t stretch to a subscription but curiosity got the better of me and I asked a neighbour who had subscribed for many years if she would pass on her copy after she had read it. Later, I took out my own subscription and enjoyed reading The Tablet even more. Now it was my very own magazine to touch and feel. I loved it.

It didn’t stop at that. I wanted to share it with friends and acquaintances, as it had been shared with me. None of my friends in the community read anything like it and I am still encouraging more and more people to pick up The Tablet and experience what I experience every week. My network reaches out to Sri Lanka, where Sr Concelia Mariampillai, a university lecturer and teacher to young novices at the Holy Cross provincialate in Negombo, requested if her Sri Lankan expats could give her a helping hand and take out a subscription to The Tablet for her, which we of course did.

Sr Concelia Mariampillai HC writes:

Some years back I had the chance to see The Tablet in the library of Archbishop’s House, Colombo. What attracted me was the fresh, interesting reports of the news and being able to read the response of the Church to current situations in Sri Lanka and around the world. Until about eight years back I was able to get The Tablet through the archbishop’s house library’s lending facility. Then to my dismay, the lending facility was terminated.

The Tablet had been a great support to me, and ever since, “like the deer that yearns for running streams”, I had hoped a chance would come for me to be able to read The Tablet again every week. Thanks to Sydney Xavier, I am now able to drink from the stream again. It is a great joy to know our brothers’ and sisters’ struggles and experiences and to have access to this font of knowledge, which enlivens in us compassion, prayer and joy – the marks of Christians.

Copies of The Tablet have already been passed to the sisters in our northern province, and in time to come, with the help of other donors, I hope it will be enjoyed in other communities and institutions in the Church in Sri Lanka.
