Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Vincent Nichols was among Catholic and other religious leaders who offered prayers for the King after Buckingham Palace released a statement confirming a diagnosis of cancer.

Cardinal Nichols said, “I am saddened to learn that His Majesty King Charles is now facing a time of treatment for cancer. On behalf of the entire Catholic Community in England and Wales, I offer His Majesty our warmest wishes and assurance of steadfast prayers for his full and speedy recovery. God bless the King.”

Buckingham Palace revealed yesterday that the King is undergoing treatment for cancer.

In a statement, the palace said, “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Archbishop of Cardiff Mark O’Toole said, “I was sorry to hear of His Majesty’s diagnosis of cancer, and assure him of my prayer. Mindful that Wales is dear to King Charles’ heart, I ask the Catholic community to remember him and the Royal Family, in their prayers, too.”

St Edmund’s Catholic Academy in Wolverhampton said, “Dear Lord, we pray for King Charles as he battles cancer. Grant him the strength to endure the trials of treatment, courage to face each day with hope and faith to trust in Your loving plan. May Your healing power flow through him and restore him to health and wholeness. Amen.”

Catholics in the Conservative Party said, “Families across the United Kingdom have been deeply affected by cancer. Our prayers are with His Majesty the King following his recent diagnosis, and with Queen Camilla and the Royal Family. We also pray for everyone suffering from cancer – and all those who care for them.”
