Goldman Sachs chairman appointed to Benet’s Hall post

A leading financier and former Attorney General of Ireland has been appointed President of the Board of Regents of St Benet’s Hall at the University of Oxford.

Peter Sutherland, Chairman of Goldman Sachs International as well as the London School of Economics, will take up leadership of the board that advises the Master and the trust of the Benedictine-run Permanent Private Hall.

“I am very happy that our Board of Regents is guided by Mr Sutherland. We shall all benefit from his wide experience, great wisdom and European outlook in education, leadership formation and the Christian spirit of service,” Professor Werner G Jeanrond, Master of St Benet’s Hall, said in a statement.

A former European Commissioner, Mr Sutherland is currently the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Migration and has acted as an adviser to the Vatican bank.

St Benet’s was established by Ampleforth Abbey, in North Yorkshire, originally to provide English Benedictine monks with an Oxford education. For many years it has welcomed lay students and in 2012 appointed its first lay master, Professor Jeanrond.

The Abbey retains oversight over St Benet’s through the trust and still houses a monastic community.
