The Tablet’s long-serving Rome correspondent Christopher Lamb is to join CNN as the broadcaster’s Vatican Correspondent.
In a press release, CNN said Lamb, who has has specialised in coverage of the Vatican for the better part of the last decade and is considered one of the foremost experts in this field, will be based between Rome and London.
He has travelled regularly with Pope Francis and has been an accredited member of the Vatican press corps since 2015.
Deborah Rayner, SVP, International Newsgathering at CNN, said: “The story of the Vatican spans so many complex societal issues and is a pivotal part of life for the more than 1.3 billion Catholics around the world. Christopher has deep experience and expertise covering that story, and we’re excited to bring that to CNN.”
Lamb has been a regular contributor to the BBC and other major media outlets.
In 2020, he published an award-winning book, The Outsider, in which he examined the Pope’s attempts to reform the church and the opposition he has encountered. He also served as a consultant and contributor to a two-part documentary, “Inside the Vatican”, broadcast on the BBC and PBS, which lifted a lid on the inner workings of the Vatican and included interviews with some of the Pope’s closest collaborators. For The Tablet, he has recently contributed a series of podcasts on the Pope’s reforms, working with the Centre for Catholic Studies at the University of Durham.
Lamb studied theology at Durham before beginning his career in journalism in London, first at The Mail on Sunday and then The Daily Telegraph. He starts with CNN next month.
Lamb said: “It has been a privilege to have worked at The Tablet for over a decade, under the editorship first of Catherine Pepinster, then Brendan Walsh and alongside such a dedicated and committed team. One of the highlights has been the opportunity to meet Tablet readers and subscribers from across the world, whether in the UK, Australia or South Sudan. I will miss them all but will continue to follow the work of The Tablet, and I am excited to join CNN.”
Tablet editor Brendan Walsh said: “Readers will miss Christopher’s enterprising, enthusiastic and committed analysis and reporting. He has been one of the outstanding figures in a line of Rome correspondents that goes back to the first issue of The Tablet in 1840, and has become one of the most trusted voices in religious journalism.
