Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) announced that Kerry Alys Robinson will be its next president and chief executive. She replaces Sr Donna Markham OP, who is resigning after nine years heading the organisation.

“The gospels call Catholics and all people of good will to serve those most in need of our aid,” Robinson said in a statement announcing the appointment.

“The staff and volunteers of Catholic Charities agencies around the country answer that call every day: feeding the hungry, comforting the afflicted and welcoming the stranger. I am deeply honoured and profoundly humbled to be a part of this life-giving mission.”

CCUSA coordinates the work of 167 member organisations around the US. The new appointment will come into effect on 23 August.

Previously, Robinson was executive partner at the Leadership Roundtable, which worked to bring expertise and accountability into the Church’s finances, management, communications and human resources.

She has also served as a member of the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, a family philanthropy that has given millions of dollars to Church-affiliated groups.

Robinson has worked with other philanthropic organisations and served on the national committee for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the anti-poverty arm of the US bishops’ conference.

She led the successful campaign to raise a $75 million endowment for the St Thomas More Centre, which conducts campus ministry at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

“I have known Kerry Robinson for many years,” said Cardinal-designate Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the US. “She is a woman of the Church and brings to CCUSA her love for Christ and wide experience of engagement with the Gospel, particularly concern for the poor and vulnerable.

“Kerry has a great ability to build relationships. I am sure her many gifts and talents will further the CCUSA mission and bring hope to the many people served.”

According to the CCUSA website, its members serve over 120,000 meals per day, provided emergency housing for 400,000 people, and provided disaster relief to 1.5 million people.

“I could not be more pleased that Kerry Robinson is stepping into this role that has meant so much to me,” Sister Donna said.

“I am confident that her visionary leadership, devotion to the Church and sincere commitment to serving those in need will bring out the best in our staff, volunteers and supporters.”
