The father of Ignacio Echeverría, “the skateboard hero”, is appealing for anyone with a testimony about his son to contact the postulators for the cause for Ignacio’s canonisation.

Joaquín Echeverría, a retired mining engineer said: “We are now collating testimonies for Ignacio’s cause.”

We reported on January 18, that Ignacio Echeverría, a devout Catholic employed as a financial crimes analyst by HSBC in London, had been put forward as a candidate for canonisation by the archdiocese of Madrid.

He died on June 3, 2017, while protecting passers-by during the London Bridge terror attack.

The Madrid-born financier ran towards a knife-wielding terrorist who had just stabbed a woman. He struck him with his skateboard.

The diversion allowed passers-by to escape to safety. But when Echeverría turned to strike a second terrorist, he was knifed in the back and died.

In a message to The Tablet via Twitter, Sr Echeverría said: “Two kinds of testimonies are required: the first is from those who knew Ignacio and will help to build a picture of his lifestyle and behaviour so that the Archbishopric of Madrid may evaluate if he led a Christian life that would make him worthy of entering the path to canonisation.”

The second kind of testimony required would be from anyone who, regarding Echeverría’s conduct as “exemplary”,  has sought his spiritual intercession to obtain personal favours.

For the second form of testimony, the postulators will require a hand or type-written statement including your full name, passport number (or DNI identity document if you are Spanish) and signature.

Statements may be  photographed or scanned and should be sent to this email address: postulacionignacioecheverria@gmail.com.

Sr Echeverría would like this request to be passed onto any interested parties. Anyone with a query regarding the testimonies may contact him on Twitter via: @Jea60930295
