After a US Supreme Court draft overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision was leaked to the press last week, abortion rights activists protested at churches on Sunday, including Old St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City where one sign said “abortion is a gift” and another read “I love abortion”. Some churches were vandalised. In Boulder, Colorado someone spray painted “My body, my choice” on the doors of Sacred Heart of Mary church. A molotov cocktail was hurled inside the office of Wisconsin Family Action’s office in Madison, early on 8 May, the Police Department said. Though the cocktail did not ignite, “it also appears a separate fire was started in response,” the incident report stated. “It appears a specific non-profit that supports anti-abortion measures was targeted.”

Archbishop William Lori, chair of the US Bishops’ Conference Pro-Life Activities Committee said the bishops pledged “to redouble our efforts to accompany women and couples who are facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies, and during the early years of parenthood, offering them loving and compassionate care through initiatives such as ‘Walking with Moms in Need’ and countless others. As we await the Court’s decision, we urge everyone to intensify their prayer and fasting that the final decision of the Court will bring about the reversal of Roe and Casey [the ruling that extended abortion rights to the then point of viability of the baby]. We hope and pray for a change in our laws and stand ready to help all pregnant women in need in each of our communities.”

Though the cocktail did not ignite, “it also appears a separate fire was started in response,” the incident report stated. “It appears a specific non-profit that supports anti-abortion measures was targeted,” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said in a statement. Wisconsin Family Action said a leftist anarchist group called Anarchy 1312 took credit for what happened, noting that the group’s logo was left on one of the walls.

Democrat Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said in a statement that “we condemn violence and hatred in all forms, including the actions at Wisconsin Family Action in Madison last night, adding “we will work against overturning Roe and attacks on reproductive rights by leading with empathy and compassion.” Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Action, said “This attack fails to frighten us, and instead steels the resolve of law-abiding, common-sense, every-day folks to stand up and push back. Americans see through the hypocrisy of the left. The violence needs to stop and stop now. Just because the liberals don’t get their way, doesn’t give them license to threaten bodily harm or to burn and destroy.” The group plans to repair its office and continue its mission, which it describes as promoting marriage, family, life, and religious freedom.”
