Body of priest found as police search for 43 Mexican students

The body of a Ugandan missionary priest has been found in a mass grave as authorities search for the remains of 43 missing trainee teachers feared massacred, the local diocese said on Friday.

Fr John Ssenyondo, a Comboni missionary, had been missing since May. According to a spokesman for the south-western diocese of Chilpancingo-Chilapa, Fr John was allegedly abducted by armed men after refusing to baptise a girl suspected of being the daughter of a local gangster, Reuters reported. The spokesman said the priest’s remains were found alongside six other bodies.

The authorities are searching for the remains of 43 student teachers the Government says were abducted in late September by corrupt police in league with a drugs gang.

The Government has detained more than 70 people in connection with the disappearance of the students.

The Mexican bishops, meeting last week, said that to bring about an end to the violence the country needed a “profound transformation of the institutional, legal and political organisation” and the “strengthening of institutions, law enforcement, education, work and safety of the new generations”.

"We Bishops of Mexico say: Enough! We do not want more blood. We do not want more deaths. We do not want more people who disappear. We do not want more pain and even more shame,” they wrote.
