Graffiti announcing Jésus sauve (Jesus saves) has been popping up on walls around Paris and nobody knows who's been spreading the word.

The spray-painted messages began appearing late last year, first occasionally and then more and more. Parisians suspected the small but growing number of evangelical Protestants here — maybe the ones who regularly paste up ads for Gospel music concerts — must be behind them.

But evangelical leaders have denied any link to the messages daubed on doors, walls and letter boxes in northern neighbourhoods of the city centre. On one highway soundwall, large white letters proclaim: “Yes, Yes, I insist: Jesus saves!”

“I’ve been doing graffiti for 30 years and this is the first time I see an artist who promotes someone else’s name rather than his own,” an artist calling himself “Mr X” told La Vie magazine.

Photos of the graffiti have circulated on social media, often with amusing additions like "Jesus saves ... Private Ryan”. Some Catholic parishes have posted shots of the message on their Instagram accounts.

City officials believe the graffiti artist -- who faces punishment between 3,750 euros and two years in prison if caught -- is an experienced spray-painter but have no idea who it is.

Admitting it was also baffled, LCI cable television put out an appeal: "If you are the mysterious tagger, don't hesitate to send us an email!”
