£1m hub for London homeless opens at Cardinal Hume Centre

The Cardinal Hume Centre has opened a new hub for homeless people at its premises in London.

The hub, part of a £1m refurbishment of the centre’s property in Victoria, includes a welcome and assessment space, a play area for children, more space for housing, welfare rights and immigration advice teams, and extra interview rooms. The redesign was inspired by the Benedictine ethos of welcome, sanctuary and support, inspired by the centre’s founder, Cardinal Basil Hume OSB.

Speaking at the opening of the centre, Bishop Nicholas Hudson, an auxiliary in Westminster, who blessed the revamped building, said: “I’m very proud to see the Cardinal Hume Centre make this statement – in bricks and mortar – of our belief in the importance of everyone whose life has been and is being turned around by the charity … Cardinal Hume would be so proud … of everyone who works here.” Mags Tierney, director of fundraising, said: “We wanted to ensure that our new space would reflect the Benedictine ethos.”
