Topic of the week – The shadows over post-liberalism

Thank you for publishing Theo Hobson’s article (“The dark night of liberalism”, 7 February). I have long been suspicious of the notion of the common good, a term which appears to have replaced private property as the Golden Calf of Catholicism.

It is, therefore, good to see the use of it by Adrian Vermeule and others exposed for the danger that it is. While I have nothing but admiration for Jenny Sinclair and her promotion of her movement Towards the Common Good, I think too little thought has been given to what is at issue.

I met Sinclair only once, shortly after she had launched the project, but on that occasion I recall commenting that “the common good” had been used by military regimes in South America as a means of suppressing dissent: it is not a neutral term.
