Hurrah to Abigail Frymann Rouch for her article on lay preachers (“I wouldn’t call it preaching …”, 9 August). I have been an enclosed nun for 30 years and during the pandemic I had the marvellous and liberating experience of proclaiming the Gospel in our public chapel and sharing a “reflection” afterwards.
There were four of us who took it in turns one day a week. On the other days we experimented trying different liturgies when we would normally have had Mass. I looked forward to those Thursdays when I knew I would hear something deeply nourishing.
They “reflected” from a place where they had been chewing the cud of the Gospel. It was fabulous. The Church doesn’t realise what it has and what it is missing.
