A change of mind


 

Peter Stanford’s interview with Michael Coren (“A mind changed”, 24 September) was moving and disturbing – but it ignored certain questions. We can acknowledge the deep and searching issues surrounding gay orientation and relationships and yet leave open the debate about celibacy and sexual intimacy. We can feel for and stand with gay couples in their love and frustrations. I have known many and taken the funerals of some who have grown together as lifelong partners. Some are celibate, some are not, some would say they are frankly past any bedroom antics.

But gay marriage is a step too far. Marriage is about male/female complementarity and being open to life in principle. This is just how it is, and the Church cannot change this reality.
