As an accountant, I read with interest the Parish Practice article, “Money matters” by Fr John Deehan (28 November). About 40 years ago, Westminster Diocese launched an appeal for funds, asking parishioners to pay a fixed amount each week. I refused, as I had no idea whether my parish was sitting on a large sum of money or on a large overdraft. I persuaded my parish priest to give me some figures, which I turned into accounts, published in the parish newsletter. This became an annual feature. Such practice should be written into Canon Law. Fr Deehan writes: “Often the contributions of parishioners are not enough ...” Do the parishioners know that they are not contributing enough? Is it made clear to them just how much more is needed?
