Michael Walsh has explained that Augustine invented the term original sin (Letters, 17 October) because he had to hand a faulty translation of Paul’s letter to the Romans and then after much soul-searching settled on the principle of an inherited genetic disease to explain the constant in the human condition of estrangement from God, others and self. Nevertheless, the term, if not the explanation of Augustine itself, remains useful to explain the chronic human penchant for missing the mark – which we call “sin”.
