Original Sin


 
It is bizarre that there appears still to be a debate about Original Sin (Letters, 10 October). I have never believed in it from the moment I discovered St Augustine invented the concept simply because he was using a faulty translation of Paul’s Letter to the Romans. He then had to tie himself in knots explaining how it could be handed down from one generation to the next. Even the magisterium has effectively stopped believing in it: Limbo – a necessary teaching if Original Sin is to be still with us – has been dropped and Baptism, once seen as cleansing the soul, has now, and quite rightly, become the basic sacrament of initiation.
