“Five thousand laymen ready to be ordained, says survey” (News from Britain and Ireland, 29 August) has to be the most optimistic headline in the 175-year history of The Tablet. I think the bishops of those priests who took part in the survey should be invited to name those whom they think should be ordained, nominating at least 10 each. Following a period of professional discernment, the 620 men should be trained independently of our seminary system and ordained as soon as possible
