McLellan questions


 
Your editorial on the McLellan inquiry into the child protection procedures of the Church in Scotland (22 August) wisely poses “deeper questions” as well as those succinctly probed by the report itself. Is another question, why is it silent on the Curia’s role?Para 2.37 quotes one witness, “Has the Vatican taken seriously policies about safeguarding …?”  Yet this is not followed through, except in para 2.7. This cites criticism of the Holy See by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. McLellan quotes positive interventions by both Pope Benedict and Pope Francis, yet these appear like personal initiatives, perhaps after media pressure. Can one believe the Curia knew nothing?
