Not a real consultation


 
The contribution of the Church in England and Wales to the forthcoming synod is likely to be risible (“Muted voice from the pews”, 25 April). The actions of the Bishops’ Conference must surely have contributed to the poor response of committed Catholics to the current questionnaire. Not publishing a synopsis of the 2014 opinion, even after the fact, did nothing to encourage me to complete the current synodal consultation. Nevertheless, I thought a serious request demanded a considered and adult response. As I started to complete the lay response form, I saw that my views on “irregular” relationships were not being sought. After being invited to participate, I feel I’ve been offered a colouring book while the clerical grown-ups get on with the real work.
