Once a mosque ...

I was intrigued by your report (The Church in the World, 13 December 2014) that the diocese of Córdoba has again reiterated its position on the former mosque in the city, saying it is a cathedral. The mezquita, described by the travel writer Jan Morris as “the greatest of the Islamic monuments in Spain”, has always been a contentious issue in the city. Having visited it on several occasions I would say that the only thing that spoils it is the Christian cathedral that seems to have been dropped from a height into the middle of it: an act of architectural vandalism. I suspect by merely removing all references to the mosque won’t necessarily resolve the issue. It is still quite common to hear locals saying, “I’m going to the mosque for Mass.”D.J. K
