Last week I took part in an international symposium in Rome on “The Idea of University”. One of the themes that emerged was the importance of promoting “dialogue” between faith and science or reason.It is important, however, that Church institutions practice what they preach. The recent withdrawal of invitations to theologian Professor Tina Beattie to lecture in the United States, England and Scotland suggests there are limits to the level of dialogue permitted. One may not agree with Professor Beattie, but she has an important perspective to contribute to the development of doctrine. Furthermore, there is considerable concern that the results of the recent surveys of marriage and sexuality in preparation for this week’s Extraordinary Synod have not been made
