It is interesting to note Pope Francis is planning to beatify Pope Paul VI (The Church in the World, 10 May).I am not in favour of “saint making”. The whole process, including the “miracles”, is just too medieval and irrelevant in today’s world. However, I am always happy for us to honour people who have contributed significantly to the good of humankind. If, as a Church, we did this, we would then be able to be inclusive of so many great people who were not necessarily Catholics or Christians, such as Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi or Florence Nightingale. Having said that, if we are into the business of celebrating the life and work of recent popes, Paul VI certainly deserves our recognition.
