I was sad to read your editorial about Kier Starmer (9 July), as I believe him to be a good man. I too have been disappointed that he ruled out rejoining the single market and customs union of the EU but to do anything he has to be first elected, and he obviously believes that this policy is necessary for election purposes.
As I write, we are in the middle of the Conservative election process for prime minister. One of the words bandied about is “integrity”, yet many candidates have been part of a shameful government, supporting such measures as the attempt to overthrow the Northern Ireland Protocol or the sending of asylum seekers to Rwanda.
