Strangers to their own history


 
As an immigrant on a workers’ permit I had to take a stringent test before I was granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK. This is known as the Life in the UK Test and it covers a wide range of British history, traditions and customs. Candidates are also expected to know about the country’s faith traditions. So I was surprised that of all the places with rich history, that Oxford City Council had no understanding of the Passion play acted on every Good Friday as a religious event. You reported (News from Britain and Ireland, 19 April) that a police officer did not even know that a Passion play was religious, and it has been reported elsewhere that one councillor even thought the organisers were putting on a live sex show.
