What a wonderful article from Mariana Mazzucato (“A mission to save capitalism”, 30 January). I was a senior manager in the water industry at privatisation in 1989. Michael Howard, then an environment minister, told me that my first 24 years in the industry had damaged enterprise because it was in the state sector, but we would now be in the private sector and be wealth-creating! This thinking needs to change, and we couldn’t have a better example than the vaccine roll-out delivered by the NHS on target, while the private sector’s “world-beating” test-and-trace system has sunk without trace.
Communism and capitalism have arrived at the same destination. Big online businesses are examples of centralised control, as was Soviet Russia. This system is working well for the rich, but for the worker on below-average pay it has been a disaster.
