Bishop Mark O’Toole’s plan for open-air Masses during the easing of lockdown is welcome (News from Britain and Ireland, 23 May). Such liturgies would establish a profound welcome for the life-giving Jesus when the community of believers gather in his name in an outdoor setting.
I had the joy of experiencing this on countless occasions during my pastoral ministry in South Africa. The people would trek for many miles to gather for Mass once a month, often celebrated under a magnificent baobab tree. These internet Masses without a congregation don’t cut it; they diminish the real presence of Jesus in the community of believers.
