My wife has advanced Alzheimer’s and has required total care for the past five years. She has remained in the family home throughout purely because our youngest son has devoted his life to being her primary carer. We have counted our blessings as the horror of the care homes scandal has unfolded.
Our hearts go out to the countless families whose circumstances left them with no alternative but to place their loved ones in a care home and who now grieve at their unnecessary loss. The decision to return Covid-19 patients from hospital to care homes, which allowed the disease to spread exponentially, will be seen in a future public inquiry as incompetent and shameful.
Two learning points emerge from this pandemic. We must find a better way to protect the most vulnerable in our society, and we must honour and justly reward the heroic staff who care for them.
