Notebook (1 March) inaccurately states that there have not been two simultaneous cardinals from England since Newman’s death. Cardinal Gasquet (president of the English Benedictines) served from 1914 to 1929 during the the time of Cardinal Bourne (1911-35) and both voted in the conclaves of 1914 and 1922. At much the same time (1903-30), Cardinal Merry del Val was also a member of the Sacred College. Although ethnically Spanish-Irish, he had been born in London, brought up near Bournemouth and studied for the priesthood at Ushaw for the Archdiocese of Westminster.Another candidate for possible recognition from a later generation was Cardinal Heard who served from 1959-73.
