Pope Francis has won hearts and minds for his emphasis on Christ’s message of love and mercy for the poor and marginalised. In Evangelii Gaudium, the Pope offered pastors guidance on interpreting traditional teaching on marriage and family life. The Vatican Curia then prepared a poorly crafted questionnaire on marriage and family life which Cardinal Nichols had circulated to clergy and laity in England and Wales for their responses. Rather than publish the results as in Germany and Austria, Edmund Adamus was asked by Cardinal Nichols to prepare a “reflection” on the results of the survey (News from Britain and Ireland, 1 March).
