In your editorial (29 June) on the report on the Birmingham Archdiocese by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse you conclude that the Catholic Church cannot police itself in this matter.
There are only so many times that we can bear to hear that lessons will be learnt. There has been major institutional failure fronted by prelates who failed to act according to the values they preach to us.
We are all sinners, and everybody makes mistakes; but in this case, where the harm to the vulnerable has been so widespread and sustained, is it likely that these shepherds would survive a vote of confidence by their sheep? They should consider their position. Their resignations would be a clear sign that business as usual is not an option.
