Despair over ESV
Having read in The Tablet that a draft of the English Standard Version (ESV) translation of the Lectionary was to be circulated within the next few weeks, I wrote to Cardinal Nichols on 8 November asking him to urge bishops to reject this translation at their Autumn Plenary. Illness prevented Cardinal Nichols from attending, but in a reply to my letter, the general secretary of the Bishops’ Conference, Fr Chris Thomas, wrote on 19 November: “The Bishops of England and Wales have formally adopted the English Standard Version: Catholic Edition as one of the principal texts for the creation of a new Lectionary for liturgical use.”
He continued: “We have sought to be ‘as literal as possible’ whilst maintaining clarity of expression and literary excellence … the ESV-CE is equally well suited for public reading and preaching, for private reading and reflection.”
