Objectors sidelined

Valerie Flessati’s article (“For King and Country ... and conscience”, 10 November) on Catholic conscientious objectors in the First World War, reminded us of the shameful nationalistic sentiments of church leaders. They ignored, even opposed, Pope Benedict XV’s calls for peace, and repudiated the Christian witness of those who were convinced that war was contrary to the Gospel.
