Thank you for your comprehensive coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to Ireland. I would like to offer a comment on Christopher Lamb’s analysis piece of 1 September. With reference to mother and baby homes, he writes of “the forced removal from their families of single mothers”.

As an Irish Catholic woman in my seventies, I have some experience of the Irish Church. The treatment of young pregnant women has to be put in context. I don’t for a moment condone what happened, however there is a social and cultural background.
