Better to abolish all titles


 
As an enthusiast for the early reforms of Pope Francis, I am disappointed that he has not gone further in abolishing honorary titles in the Church (Letter from Rome, 11 January). Restricting the title of monsignor to the over 65s, vicars general and Vatican officials will not abolish clericalism. It may even enhance it. Let us pray that this is just a first step!Honorary titles in society or the Church are simply Establishment bribes to conformity, rather than an encouragement to radical mission in imitation of Jesus. We need to abolish them all together. Jesus was very clear to James and John, and their mother, that his followers were to be servants and slaves, not power-hungry seekers of positions (Matthew 20:20-28).
