I was appalled to read in Catherine Pepinster’s column (4 January) of priests evading responsibility for child abuse by hiding, while making their confessions, behind the sixth commandment against adultery. The implication is that so long as they didn’t commit adultery, it was OK – and you can’t commit adultery with a child because the child isn’t married. The casuistry and hypocrisy is staggering.
