Cardinal Keith O’Brien and I were students together, ordained on the same day, and have been friends for 60 years. In meeting with the cardinal, on the occasions when he has stayed with me, or I with him, in our annual celebrations of ordination anniversary and new year, I have never witnessed or suspected inappropriate behaviour or language. Any hint of what newspapers have called a “long-term gay relationship” must have been carefully hidden.
